Once again, Zachary F., the Director of the Empower Network Support Department, kicked off our week with inspiration and…
As many of you know from a previous Support Blog article that the Empower Network Staff have a Morning Kickoff Meeting every Monday.
This meeting is used to share updates, discuss our upcoming weeks, and to set a positive tone for the week.
Zachary led a discussion about motivation, particularly focused on the question…
What is Motivation?
Motivation is defined by experts, “as the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge.”
Motivation to entrepreneurs is often deep-seeded in a desire for freedom.
Entrepreneurs are driven to be their own boss, live on their own terms, and not feel caged in their own world.
No matter what your desires are, no matter what initiates your motivation, psychologists agree that there are three basic components of motivation.
Zach shared these components with us, and how they contribute to becoming and staying motivated. They are…
3 Components of Motivation
Once you read about these components of motivation, you will start to realize something you’ve always known, but couldn’t quite put into words.
We as humans share these three components…
Activation is the initiation of a behavior.
This is the very start of the process to meet a specific goal. This is the start of the desire, the initial decision to act.
Persistence, as you might have guessed, is the continued effort you put in toward your goal.
You persist, even though you might encounter obstacles or problems. You persist, because you know your desired outcome is preferred over giving up.
This component, intensity, measures the intensity in which an individual pursues their goals.
The best way to describe intensity is with an example, in which case we’ll use Empower Network affiliates as an example.
One EN affiliate might coast by and not put a lot of effort into their business, thus dooming themselves to a lack of success.
On the other hand, another EN affiliate will attend all Empower Network webcasts, Empower Hour, follow the 8 Core Commitments, and take advantage of every opportunity they could to grow their business.
The first affiliate lacks intensity, while the other pursues their goals with more intensity. Without much intensity, it is hard to sustain motivation.
While there are these three components of motivation, there are also two basic different kinds of motivation.
2 Kinds of Motivation
You’ve probably heard the terms ‘intrinsic’ and ‘extrinsic’ before, right?
Well these terms are used to describe the two different ‘breeds’ of motivation that psychologists have defined.
Extrinsic – This type of motivation arises from outside of the individual. This type of motivation could be monetary reward, praise, or for public recognition.
Intrinsic – These motivations come from inside yourself, inside the individual. You are motivated to complete a goal for personal satisfaction.
Motivation can be fickle…
As entrepreneurs, you don’t have a boss breathing down your neck assigning you deadlines.
For many people, the “employee mentality” is hard to escape from. You just might operate more comfortably with someone managing and disciplining you.
But wouldn’t you rather break out of that comfort zone and fly free?
Well, that will all depend on your activation, persistence, and intensity :-)
How do you stay motivated to meet your goals?
